Mr Arnold Goede | MBChB, MS, FRCS (Gen Surg)

Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon

Mr Arnold Christiaan Goede is a colorectal and general surgeon based in Buckinghamshire with specialist expertise in pelvic floor surgery. Following graduation from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, he moved to the UK, working as a surgical trainee for four years. He spent two years researching at the Royal Free Hospital and was awarded a Master in Surgery from the University of London. He completed his specialist training on the Oxford Higher Surgical Training Scheme in 2010, during which he gained exposure to complex colorectal and laparoscopic surgery, generating a specialist interest in these areas as well as pelvic floor surgery. He finished his training with Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery Fellowships in Bristol and Reading.

Arnold works with other specialists in diagnosing or excluding bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, investigation of and surgical and medical treatment of bowel disease. He has a particular interest in diagnosing and managing obstructed defaecation syndrome, external rectal prolapse, recalcitrant anal fissure, and recurrent haemorrhoid disease secondary to rectal intussusception and chronic constipation and other disorders of the pelvic floor, including faecal incontinence, fistulae and rectal prolapse. Mr Goede is within the top 5 surgeons in the UK by volume for bowel cancer resections with excellent outcomes. He also regularly performs colonoscopy, gastroscopy, laparoscopic and open hernia surgery, gallbladder surgery.

Currently, Arnold is the Director of the Department of General Surgery, Director of Medical Education for the St George’s School of Medicine, Grenada students based at Buckinghamshire Healthcare. He is also the educational supervisor to attending Oxford higher surgical trainees and the regional representative at the Oxford Chapter of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGB). At the Buckinghamshire NHS Trust, he is the Nutrition Lead for Surgery, the Enhanced Recovery Programme Lead, and the lead general surgeon for the National Spinal Injuries Unit.

Arnold has published extensively, in particular during the final years of his training and as a fellow. Interests include his research subject, carcinoid tumours, and more lately, minimally invasive haemorrhoid surgery, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, pelvic floor surgery and single port laparoscopic surgery.
